Hospital night duty that stops the 2 am theft
September brought four hospital thefts in seven days. October added custodial questions. The fix is five night disciplines that cost nothing: lock up, passes, rounds, entries, handover.
The first half of September 2026 was rough for hospitals. A masked intruder at Thaltej entered through a window around 2 am and broke a medical store drawer with scissors. Rayagada lost four air conditioners over two nights. AIIMS Bilaspur attendants lost bags at 3 am. At Agartala a phone vanished from charge and the suspect hid on the ceiling.
Four cities, one roster failure. Night was treated as day with fewer names.
What repeats in every case
Night hours. Value at rest in unlocked drawers and walls. Open entries after 10 pm. No record of who entered. CCTV that confirmed the loss the next morning. Add Tiruvallur, where a man posing as staff took gold near the MRI room, and the lesson widens. Visitor logs must verify staff too, not only visitors.
Five disciplines that cost nothing
1. Fixed lockup hour. Medical stores, cash drawers, pharmacy counters lock at a set time with a named key holder. Cash and high value drugs never sleep in open drawers.
2. Night passes after 10 pm. One named attendant per patient, checked at the ward door. Strangers cannot drift among sleepers at 3 am when every face needs a slip.
3. Irregular rounds, signed live. Rayagada lost ACs on night two even after tightening, because predictable rounds teach the safe window. Vary the route, cover outdoor units, sign the beat book at the moment.
4. One night entry. After 10 pm, one gate stays open with a guard. Others lock from inside with keys at nursing. Ground floor store windows get grills or a night check on the round sheet.
5. Photo handover. Shift register page photographed on a phone, in a dated folder. It proves who was on, what was locked, what was already missing.
| Night failure | Discipline that stops it |
|---|---|
| Cash in open drawer | Lockup hour plus key holder |
| Strangers among sleepers | Named night pass per patient |
| ACs cut two nights running | Irregular outdoor rounds |
| Window entry at 2 am | Single entry plus window check |
| Impostor takes jewellery | Staff identity challenge |
Where lady guards stand
Female wards need female guards for presence and searches. Pharmacy queues, maternity corridors, and attendant bag checks at night belong to lady guards. Roster them first on those wards, not last. The night supervisor round should include those wards early.

Questions buyers ask us
How many guards does a night hospital need?
Count entries, wards, pharmacy, and parking separately. Most small hospitals need two at night plus a supervisor round. One guard for the full campus is decoration.
Do we need lady guards at night?
Yes for maternity, gynaecology, and female wards, plus bag searches. A male guard cannot search women attendants, which is how items leave.
Will CCTV stop night theft?
Cameras record, guards interrupt. A camera nobody watches at 2 am proves what happened. A round with a signed beat book prevents the next one.
