What the Kowkoor case means for your apartment gate
A five-year-old was killed in Kowkoor, Hyderabad, with a guard named as accused. For housing societies in MP, the lesson is narrow and practical: check who stands at your gate before you trust him with your children.
Early reports from Kowkoor, near Hyderabad, describe every housing society's worst week. A five-year-old girl went missing from a gated community, ransom calls followed, and police named a security guard as accused. Residents are now demanding strict punishment, and the agency reportedly removed the guard days earlier.
For societies in Sagar, Bhopal, and Indore, the question is not about that one gate. It is about yours. Who verified the man at your gate, on what paper, and when.
What press reports say happened in Kowkoor
Multiple newsrooms reported the same core facts in mid October 2026. The child was the daughter of a scientist. She was kidnapped from the community where the family lived. Police arrested a guard and later pointed to an ex guard link. The exact ransom figure varies across reports, so treat numbers with care.
What matters for your society is the pattern, not the dispute over lakhs. Access plus familiarity plus unsupervised hours. A guard knows entry times, knows which flat has children, and knows when the lane is empty.
The three papers most gates never ask for
Walk to your own gate today and ask the secretary for three things. In our experience across MP, two out of three societies cannot produce even one.
1. Police verification on file. Not a verbal promise. A dated acknowledgement from the police, with the guard's name, address, and photo. If the agency says verification is in process, the guard should not be on child facing duty until it arrives.
2. PSARA licence in the contract. The agency must hold a licence for Madhya Pradesh, with number and validity dates. Our licence number sits in every contract we sign. If a quote avoids naming it, set the quote aside.
3. Payroll proof. ESI and PF challans for the last month, with the deployed guards on the rolls. A guard paid in cash, off the books, has no reliever when he takes leave and no insurance when he is hurt.
| Paper to ask for | What good looks like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Police verification | Dated copy with secretary, renewed yearly | Only on agency letterhead |
| PSARA licence | Number, state, validity in contract | Number missing or another state |
| Payroll and ESI, PF | Last month challan with names | Cash pay, no challan |
| Duty roster | Named reliever for weekly off | Same guard 30 days straight |
Dismissed does not mean gone
One detail in the Kowkoor coverage deserves attention from every resident welfare association. Reports mention the accused had been sacked days before the incident. An ex guard who still enters the campus to meet friends, collect dues, or sleep in the guard room is a risk the committee created.
Set a simple rule. Once a guard is removed, his entry pass ends the same hour. Inform the maintenance team, change the room lock if he held a key, and tell the new guard in writing that the old hand is not to be admitted without the secretary's call.
The roster test that catches most fraud
Ask who covers the weekly off. A single guard post running 30 days with one name on the register is either a ghost reliever or double shifts. Both break attention. A 24 by 7 post needs roughly four guards once rest days and leave are funded, not one strong man.
Supervision is the second half. A named supervisor should visit weekly, sign the register with date and time, and share a phone number residents can call. If your agency has no supervisor layer, you bought a uniform, not a service.

Questions buyers ask us
How do we verify a guard before he joins our gate?
Ask the agency for police verification proof, a photo ID copy, and the date of verification. Keep copies with the secretary, not just with the agency. Reverify once a year.
What is a PSARA licence and why does our society need it?
The Private Security Agencies Regulation Act, 2005 requires agencies to hold a state licence. Ask for the number, state, and validity dates, and write the number into your contract.
Should we hire a guard directly to save money?
Direct hiring saves the margin and moves the risk to you. You become responsible for wages, ESI, PF, and verification. An agency payroll keeps that liability off the society.
