MP minimum wages change on 1 October — what your guard rate must be
Unskilled is Rs 12,425 a month until 30 September 2026. The October VDA revision lands in late September and applies from day one — and as principal employer, the shortfall is yours. Here is the arithmetic to check before you sign.
Twice a year, in April and October, the Madhya Pradesh Labour Department revises the Variable Dearness Allowance — and with it the minimum wage floor for every scheduled employment including security work. The current notification (Commissioner of Labour, Indore) runs 1 April to 30 September 2026. The next one lands in late September and applies from 1 October.
If you are signing or renewing a guarding contract this month, you are signing across a revision boundary. Get the arithmetic right now or inherit someone else's shortfall.
The current floor (1 April–30 Sept 2026)
Single uniform rate across MP — basic plus a flat Rs 2,850/month VDA:
| Category | Basic/mo | VDA/mo | Total/mo | Total/day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unskilled (most guard posts) | Rs 9,575 | Rs 2,850 | Rs 12,425 | Rs 478 |
| Semi-skilled | Rs 10,571 | Rs 2,850 | Rs 13,421 | Rs 516 |
| Skilled | Rs 12,294 | Rs 2,850 | Rs 15,144 | Rs 582 |
| Highly skilled (supervisors) | Rs 13,919 | Rs 2,850 | Rs 16,769 | Rs 645 |
Check the October notification on labour.mponline.gov.in in the third week of September. Do not wait for it to reach you through a vendor — the effective date is 1 October regardless.
What one guard lawfully costs (before the agency earns anything)
On the Rs 12,425 unskilled base, the employer's statutory load stacks as follows (standard rates, planning figures):
| Component | Basis | Approx/mo |
|---|---|---|
| Gross wage floor | Basic + VDA | Rs 12,425 |
| Employer EPF (12 percent) | EPF Act 1952 | Rs 1,491 |
| Employer ESI (3.25 percent) | ESI Act 1948 (gross under Rs 21,000) | Rs 404 |
| Bonus (8.33 percent) | Payment of Bonus Act 1965 | Rs 1,035 |
| Gratuity provision (4.81 percent) | Gratuity Act 1972 | Rs 598 |
| Employer cost per guard, before relievers/supervision/margin | ~Rs 15,953 |
Then add the roster reality from our rate-breakdown guide: a 24x7 post needs about 4.2 people once weekly rest and leave are funded — plus supervision, uniform, verification, training and insurance. Any monthly per-post quote that cannot fund this stack is not a bargain. It is somebody's wages, PF or ESI missing.
The three checks that take an afternoon
1. Ask for last month's ESI and PF challans plus the ECR. Totals prove nothing; the ECR names the guards and amounts. Confirm the wage rate used matches the current MP notification for the skill category.
2. Count the roster including relievers. For each post, how many named people cover shifts, weekly rest and leave? Check it against the ~4.2 figure for 24x7. "Three guards for 24x7" means funded double shifts — unlawful, and the reason guards sleep at 4 a.m.
3. Ask the mid-contract question. What happens to my rate if the minimum-wage notification changes mid-contract? An honest agency has a pass-through clause. An agency that absorbs it squeezes the guard, and the guard leaves — turnover is the interest you pay on an underfunded rate.
How to make October quotes comparable
Ask every bidder for the rate split three ways — guard cost (wage/ESI/PF/bonus/leave), deployment cost (relievers/supervision/uniform/training), agency cost and margin — all computed at the October rates or with the revision clause stated. Then compare like with like. If an agency cannot break its number down, it does not know its costs, which is worse than hiding them.
Legitimate reasons one honest quote sits below another still exist: fewer, better-placed posts; existing local supervision spread across sites (ours in Sagar district is, which is a genuine efficiency); a simpler shift pattern where the risk is actually daytime. Take those. Reject the same scope for meaningfully less money with no explanation.
