Thieves stripped a Shivpuri mortuary for copper — what MP hospitals must lock next
Two mortuary freezers dismantled at Shivpuri District Hospital, compressors and copper pipes gone, plus cut signal cables halting four trains and pump-set cables stripped in Narsinghpur. Copper is the new cash — here is the outdoor-asset lockdown for MP hospitals and plants.
Even the dead were not spared. That was the headline out of Shivpuri in the first week of September 2026 — and it is the most useful hospital-security warning MP has had this month.
Thieves entered the post-mortem house at Shivpuri District Hospital and dismantled two mortuary freezers to strip copper components: compressors, copper pipes, copper cables and parts of stabilisers. The preservation system went down with them. Hospital officials reported to police; a case stands registered against unidentified persons under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Read it as a hospital story and you miss the point. Read the full police blotter and it is a copper story — the same week saw signal cables cut at a railway location box (four trains — Jabalpur-Rewa, LTT-Rajgir, Nizamuddin-Jabalpur, Lucknow-Yesvantpur — held 30 to 60 minutes) and repeated complaints of copper cable theft from farm pump-sets in Narsinghpur's Mahgawan belt. Police are examining whether an organised lifter-to-buyer circuit links the three.
Why outdoor copper keeps walking away
Copper pays per kilo, unmarked, same-day. And it sleeps outside:
- Mortuary and terrace plant — freezers, AC outdoor units, stabilisers — behind a building nobody patrols after 10 p.m.
- Cable runs — pump rooms, boundary lighting, railway location boxes — long, dark, unobserved.
- No ownership — the gate guard owns the gate; nobody owns the back compound on the round sheet.
Our September hospital-theft analysis ( four hospital thefts in seven days ) showed night wards lose portable value. This is the outdoor twin: fixed value that looks immovable until someone brings tools.
The outdoor-asset lockdown (five steps)
1. Register every kilo that sleeps outside. Freezers, AC outdoor units, pumps, cable routes, stabilisers — photographed, numbered, on one sheet at the nursing station and with the guard supervisor. What is not listed is never checked.
2. Cage and light it. Mesh cages over outdoor units and pump heads, motion lighting on the mortuary approach and cable corridors. A thief with time defeats a cage; a thief on a lit round does not get time.
3. Put the back compound on the beat book. Timed, irregular rounds covering mortuary, terrace plant and pump room — signed at the moment, not at shift end. Predictable rounds teach the thief the safe window, as the Rayagada AC case proved.
4. Lock tools away from tools' targets. Ladders, cutters and spare cable left beside the asset are an invitation. The gate register should log every contractor entry to plant rooms — copper theft often starts with a daytime recce.
5. Photograph the handover. Night-to-morning outdoor checklist, photographed on a phone. When the morning finds a stripped freezer, the photo proves whether it was intact at 6 a.m. or already gone at midnight.
Cameras record copper theft; guards interrupt it
Shivpuri, Narsinghpur and the railway box all surfaced through after-the-fact discovery — the CCTV pattern we warn about : a camera nobody watches at 2 a.m. is a recording device, not a guard. Outdoor assets need a human round plus a camera, in that order.
Where this connects to your other risks
Copper is not the only metal that walks: our Silwani warehouse piece shows how godowns lose grain the same way, and our Hamidia parking piece shows hospital compounds lose vehicles at the same hour. Fix the night round once and all three curves bend.
