63 sacks gone, new locks on the door — the Silwani warehouse lock-swap trick
Paras Nath warehouse at Uchehra-Jamunia, Silwani: 31 quintals of wheat in 63 sacks worth Rs 83,000 stolen overnight, old locks replaced with new ones to delay discovery. A vehicle job needing a dock plan — here is the godown fix.
Morning showed new locks. That single detail makes the Silwani warehouse theft the most instructive godown case MP has produced this month.
Operator Rameshwar Jain reached Paras Nath warehouse at Uchehra-Jamunia village, Silwani tehsil (Raisen district), to find the locks changed. Inside: 63 sacks of wheat gone — 31 quintals, worth about Rs 83,000. Police reconstruction is straightforward: overnight the gang broke the locks, moved sacks out, loaded them to a pickup or other goods carrier, fled — and fitted new locks on the door so the loss would surface only at opening time. A case against unidentified accused is registered; warehouse and approach-road CCTV is being scanned.
Sixty-three sacks is not a head-load job. It is a vehicle, time, and confidence that nobody would come.
Why godowns lose truckloads quietly
- Locks nobody owns. Unnumbered padlocks, duplicate keys with three people, no key issue log — a swapped lock reads as normal until opening.
- Stock nobody counts nightly. Without a closing stack count, the morning cannot say whether 63 sacks left at midnight or over three nights.
- No vehicle log. A pickup at the dock at 2 a.m. should be an incident by itself; without a gate register , it is just tyre marks.
- Predictable darkness. One guard on the office veranda, godown bays unlit and unrounded — loading can proceed at working speed.
Our Diwali-peak analysis ( festive stock theft ) warned dispatch speed enables theft. Silwani proves the off-season version: any night with a full godown is peak night.
The godown lockdown (five controls)
1. Number every lock, log every key. Stamped lock numbers, a key register with named holders, seal numbers where stock warrants. A new lock on the door should scream, not blend in.
2. Closing and opening stack counts. Bay-wise sack counts signed at close and verified at open, photographed. The 63-sack figure should have been known at 6 a.m. from paper, not from an empty floor.
3. Vehicle-in/out log with time stamps. Every pickup, its number, driver name, in/out times — the gate discipline applied to the dock. Cross it to CCTV retention of 30+ days; cameras alone only document the truck leaving.
4. Irregular night rounds covering bays. Vary times, cover dock approaches and lock lines, sign at the moment. The same round discipline that would have saved Shivpuri's mortuary plant saves wheat here.
5. Verify the men on the dock. Loader, driver, night guard — per-person verification per our QR-check guide . Warehouse receipt frauds (Rs 26 crore IDBI/Kisan Dhan matter tied to the same MP warehouse belt) prove paper stock without physical control is fiction.
What a dock guard costs against 63 sacks
Rs 83,000 buys months of night dock cover at honest bill rates . The second loss — the lender, insurer or depositor who stops trusting the warehouse — costs the business. Price the post against the stock value sleeping inside, not against last year's quiet months.
The cash twin
Grain in a godown and cash in an ATM on Bhanpura Road share the failure: value sleeping behind one lock with no round. Fix both with the same key-and-round discipline before the festive loading peak our surge calendar warns about.
