Gas cutter at 2 a.m. in Mandsaur — why ATMs need a guard, not just a camera
Four men cut open a public-bank ATM on Bhanpura Road, Mandsaur around 2 a.m. on 30 August and took Rs 6.5 lakh; nobody knew until the service team arrived. Add a failed Singrauli ATM hit and three MP men held for a Hubballi heist. Unwatched cash sleeps badly.
A gas cutter is loud, bright and slow. That it worked undisturbed inside an ATM lobby until morning tells you everything about ATM security in the districts.
On the intervening night of 30 August 2026, around 2 a.m., four thieves reached a public-bank ATM centre on Bhanpura Road under Bhanpura police station, Mandsaur district. They broke the shutter lock, entered, cut the machine open with a gas cutter and removed about Rs 6.5 lakh. Bank officials learned of it only when a company servicing team arrived and found the damaged machine. Police inspected, pulled surrounding CCTV — a suspicious car figures in the scan — and registered the case. Investigation continues.
Set that beside the fortnight's other two ATM entries: unidentified thieves targeted a private ATM in Singrauli's Jayanti area and fled empty-handed after vandalising it, and Karnataka police held three MP men for an ATM heist in the Vijayapura/Hubballi region, seizing the Scorpio used in the theft. MP sits on both sides of the ATM-crime map — as victim district and as source of travelling gangs.
Why ATMs lose to gas cutters
- One shutter lock, zero humans. A shutter lock delays a cutter by minutes; without a response, minutes are enough.
- Alarm to nobody. Many lobbies alarm to a panel nobody answers at 2 a.m. — the Mandsaur job ran its full noisy course.
- Discovery by servicing team. Morning-after discovery means the trail is cold and the cash is layered before the FIR exists.
- Isolated siting. Highway and market-edge ATMs sleep alone; the Seoni highway ambush shows what predictable lonely value invites.
This is the cash twin of our Silwani godown case: value sleeping behind one lock with no round.
The ATM-cluster fix (what banks actually buy)
1. Night lobby post per cluster, not per machine. One trained guard covering 2–3 nearby ATMs on a timed patrol beats one guard per machine on cost and beats zero everywhere on outcome. Bhanpura Road needed a human within five minutes of the shutter breaking.
2. Alarm-to-human chain. Hooter plus call tree: guard, cluster supervisor, bank officer, police — tested monthly. An alarm that rings in an empty back office is decoration.
3. Shutter discipline + anti-cutter delay. Double-lock shutters, internal bollards, cutter-resistant anchoring — delay matters only when a responder exists. Pair hardware with the patrol from step one.
4. CCTV watched or patrolled past. Retention helps prosecution (the Scorpio in the Hubballi case); it does not prevent cutting. Either watch the feed or walk past the glass — cameras alone only film the sparks.
5. Cash-holding discipline. Calibrate loading to the cover available — a lone highway ATM should not sleep full before a long weekend. Log every loading and service visit in the gate/visit register .
What the patrol costs against Rs 6.5 lakh
One Mandsaur loss funds a long season of shared night patrols at honest bill rates . Banks already know this maths for currency chests; the district ATM cluster deserves the same treatment before the festive cash peak our surge guide maps.
